5 Drinks That Will Transform Your Health

Your health depends on your choices in life, a lot more than the genes you inherited from your parents. In fact, genes play only about 10-20% role in the development of any health issues. Your thoughts, level of stress, social connections, the food you eat, the drinks you consume, and the activities you choose to do on a daily basis contribute to almost 90% of your current health conditions.

The most important thing you can do to control your genes every day is to eat well. Quality food and drinks wash over your DNA every day turning on or off, up or down signals from your genes, says Huffington Post.

And today I want to talk about the drinks to include in your diet that will help to turn those good genes on and the bad ones off.

5 Drinks That will Transform your Health

1. Warm lemon water

Every single morning I start my day with a large glass of warm lemon water. I simply squeeze the juice from half of the lemon and mix it with about 16oz of warm, not hot water. I have been doing this for the last 10 years and for all good reasons.

First and foremost, it hydrates the body after the sleep, therefore your skin looks healthier and the body feels happier. In fact, Ayurvedic medicine says that lemon stimulates your “agni“(fire), which helps to jump-start the digestive system. And as a result, it might help with a weight loss if you are looking for this benefit. Also, lemon water is a wonderful source of Vitamin C, which might prevent cold and flu.

One thing you want to keep in mind, though. Lemon is acidic. And you want to protect your teeth from that acid, your enamel will get damaged otherwise. And the simple trick to keep your teeth healthy is to rinse the mouth with plain warm water right after you drink your lemon water.

2. Celery juice

About half an hour after my lemon water I drink a full glass of freshly made celery juice. I have recently started doing that when many of my fellow yogis were raving about this drink. So after a little bit of research, I realized that this is something I also want to include in my daily routine.

There are lots of health benefits to celery juice:

  1. It has anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties according to the research (1)
  2. It relieves constipation and heals the entire digestive system
  3. It has a high amount of Vitamin K, that keeps bones and heart healthy. Dr. Axe has a great article about Vitamin K Benefits
  4. It replaces electrolytes in the body as it has decent amounts of potassium and sodium
  5. It may help with high blood pressure and prevent kidney stones due to its diuretic properties
  6. It is high in Vitamin C
  7. It balances the pH level of the body, therefore can help prevent different types of cancers (2)

Probably if to dig deeper, you will find a lot more benefits to it. But the whole point is, that it will only make your life healthier and happier. Even my husband drinks it every day now and truly enjoys it! Celery juice is actually very tasty by itself, without anything else added to it.

If you are interested to learn more about celery juice, Dr.Axe has a great article about the celery juice and possible side effects.

3. Coconut water

green coconut

If you watch some famous yogis on Instagram, you will notice that most of them are keeping coconut water next to their mats. And the reasons is that water is no longer famous these days… Haha, just kidding.

Naturally refreshing, coconut water has a sweet, nutty taste. Not to be confused with high-fat coconut milk or oil, coconut water is a clear liquid in the fruit’s center that is tapped from young, green coconuts.

Here are some health benefits of coconut water:

  1. It contains electrolytes and it may be better at replacing lost fluids than a sports drink or even water
  2. It is low in carbohydrates and sodium and rich in potassium and magnesium (3)
  3. It can help to improve blood sugar levels and therefore benefit against diabetes (4)
  4. And it is just tasting great!

I love to have coconut water throughout the day. If you can buy a green coconut and get juice from it – it would be the best! Otherwise, there are plenty of commercial options available now. Just make sure that the only ingredient there is coconut water and nothing else. My most favorite one is Harmless Coconut Water. It contains pure coconut water made from young, Thai coconuts and it is never thermally pasteurized. Therefore it is naturaly turns pink.

4. Golden Milk

Golden Milk

That famous Golden Milk! You have probably heard of it at least once. It became so popular lately and for good reasons. I love it especially during winter evenings. It heals the heart and soul, and the body, of course ;). Well, if you have never heard of it, it is plant-based milk made with turmeric and some other spices, sweetened a little to taste and consumed while warm. I have another whole article devoted to this magical drink. You can read it here.

This is my almost everyday evening drink. It also helps to sleep well, for whatever reasons.

5. Lemon-ginger hot tea

On winter days this drink is just perfect for staying healthy. Ginger lemon tea really great to boost the immune system as well as reducing some pains.

Here are some health benefits of ginger-lemon tea:

  • Ginger is reported to increase satiety and reduce the feelings of hunger (5)
  • Ginger has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties
  • Ginger may help prevent or treat vomiting and nausea. It is also used to alleviate an upset stomach
  • Ginger may help prevent blood clotting and reduce cholesterol (6)
  • Lemon is rich in vitamin C, a nutrient that is packed with antioxidants and has immune boosting properties
  • When lemon juice is added to a cup of hot tea, it gets metabolized and begins alkalizing the body
  • Lemon is known to increase insulin resistance and reduce the level of fat in the body (7)
  • Due to the anti-inflammatory effects of both ginger and lemon, this tea helps reduce different kinds of pain
  • This tea also boosts your mood and regulates mood swings
  • It also works towards giving you beautiful and flawless skin.

If you tend to catch infections easily or get sick as soon as the weather changes, it is a great idea to start drinking this tea to improve your immunity.

It is very easy to do this tea and all you need is hot water, fresh ginger, and lemon. While water is boiling, grind the ginger or slice it in small pieces, cut 2-3 pieces of lemon and add hot boiling water. Allow it to sit covered for about 10 min and drink while it is still hot. I really like to feel ginger in my tea, therefore I use a generous amount of fresh ginger when preparing it.

You can also add a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar to get even more health benefits. And if you like cinnamon, add it to boost the flavor.

One more drink – Water

water

Did you know that your body is composed of 60% of water? Even your skin contains water. So water is truly essential to health. And if you don’t like the taste of plain water, just do a fruit infused water, by adding your favorite fruit and letting it stay for a couple of hours or overnight in the fridge. It does not add any calories and tastes amazing.

I personally love water. For a very long time, I preferred to drink ONLY plain water, coffee and some teas without any sugar or milk. Now that I completely refused coffee and rarely drink any packaged teas, I stick to just plain water for quite some time. I know, it sounds a bit boring. But considering that our body requires about 6-8 glasses of water a day to just simply support our metabolism, that is the way to go.

Conclusion

Our health depends completely on the choices we make. And one of them is what we choose to drink. While water is absolutely essential to keeping your body healthy, there are also some drinks that can seriously transform your health.

Choose what fits your body and mind. And stay healthy and happy!

  2. You reminded me to keep drinking lemon or lime water, which is the first thing I had this morning 🙂 I really like these 5 drinks and the fact that you added just plain water at the end. It’s so easy to forget. I start my days now by filling a half gallon jar with alkaline RO water. That way I know if I drank enough, which is super important for me with all these chemo-ish drugs I take! I really love this post, Anna. This info is really valuable for everyone!

  15. Water… Yeah, I don’t know why it’s so hard for me!

  16. I’ve never tried celery water. Would you get the same benefit from just eating celery? Do you have ACV in your routine?

    1. Eating celery is great as well. You just get more concentration of all Vitamins from celery juice minus fiber. And how much celery can you really eat at once? Maybe a couple of sticks? But one glass of juice contains all Vitamins from the whole one bunch of celery. And about AVC. I have mixed feelings about it. It is great when you need to heal from something, like a cold or sore throat. Also, I like to add it to some foods like salads sometimes. Otherwise, I would not consume it every single day. It acts like antibiotics. And you never want to consume antibiotics every single day. Hope this helps.

  17. These sound good! I can’t wait to try some!

  18. These sound yummy! Except for the celery juice. Never was a big celery fan! Thanks for the list. 🙂
